Richard Bender Carpenter Sr., 93
Sep 1, 2017Hancock, Md., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md.Born Aug. 21, 1924, in Maugansville, Md., he was the son of the late Paul “Doc” and Alice Carpenter, and the widower of Alma (Bernhard) Dyer Carpenter.He served in the U.S. Navy during World War 11. Over the years, he worked at Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown; and Morgan County Schools in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Washington County Schools in Hancock, Md., as a custodian and bus driver.After his retirement, Richard enjoyed his yard work, his plants and taking care of his fish.He was a member of the American Legion Post 26 in Hancock and the James W. Bowers Masonic Lodge 173 in Hancock.He is survived by his children, James Carpenter Sr. and his wife, Roxanna, and Edwin “Dean” Carpenter, all of Berkeley Springs, John Dyer, Betty Foster and Janet Truax, all of Hagerstown, and Ina Potter and her husband, Cecil, of Hancock; a daughter-in-law, Darlene R. Carpenter of Berkeley Springs; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents and wife, Richard was preceded in death by a son, Richard B. Carpenter Jr.; brothers, Charlie, Paul “Willy” and Donnie Carpenter; and sister, Nancy Hahn.Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at noon at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main St., Hancock, with Rev. William Swope officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service from 10 a.m. until noon.Interment will follow at the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, with military honors conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard.In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Alzheimer’s Research. (Herald-Mail Media)
